Philadelphia School Partnership Awards $1.2 Million Grant to Drexel University School of Education

PHILADELPHIA – On Monday, March 20, The Philadelphia School Partnership (PSP) announced it has given a $1.2 million grant to Drexel University to establish the Dragons Teach Middle Years (DTMY) program at its School of Education.  This innovative program provides an opportunity for undergraduates to become certified to teach middle school science and math—two of the city’s highest-need subject areas—while being trained specifically for the unique challenges of the urban classroom. At scale, the program will graduate 40 teachers annually, creating a new pipeline of excellent educators in Philadelphia schools.

6abc’s Mike Neilon Hired as Vice President for Media Relations at Bellevue Communications Group

PHILADELPHIA Bellevue Communications Group today announced that it has hired Mike Neilon, planning editor for “6abc Action News,” as Vice President of Media Relations effective January 30, 2017. In his new position with the firm, Neilon will be responsible for guiding the firm’s messaging efforts to produce newsworthy story placements throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.

“For two decades, Mike has been behind the scenes at one of the most successful local TV newsrooms in the nation,” said Bellevue President Kevin Feeley. “He is recognized as one of the top professionals in the TV news business, and we are delighted to have him join our team.”

Before joining Bellevue Communications Group, Neilon spent 20 years with local ABC affiliate WPVI-TV, serving first as a producer for “AM Philadelphia.” As planning editor for “6abc Action News,” he worked with producers, reporters, photographers, and news executives to arrange and execute all local news coverage. During his time, he secured interviews with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, former President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, as well as exclusive coverage of the Democratic National Coverage and Pope Francis’ visit. Neilon also helped to spearhead 6abc’s extensive coverage of major news events in the region, including the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State and Joe Paterno’s subsequent firing, the 2015 Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia, and the Center City building collapse at 22nd and Market Streets.

“Bellevue’s work with Philadelphia media is unmatched,” said Neilon. “I look forward to being a part their growth and continued success.”

Neilon graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelor’s degree in Television and Radio Journalism. Prior to his work as a planning editor, Neilon was a news coordinator for the Montel Williams Talk Show in New York. He began his journalism career in radio by working at stations in upstate New York and New Hampshire.

Bellevue Communications Group also recently hired NBC10 producer Kareen Preble to the firm as an account executive. Preble, a graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Communications, served as a producer for KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, NM, and WKEF/WRGT-TV in Dayton, OH before joining NBC10.

Other duties included managing staff and content, editing video, maintaining social media to connect with NBC10 viewers, and covering special events that impacted the area, including the Democratic National Convention and the Papal visit. Preble also contributed to NBC10’s Emmy Award-winning coverage of the fatal 2015 Amtrak derailment.

Finishing Trades Institute Holds Apprenticeship Open House For National Apprenticeship Week

PHILADELPHIA – The Finishing Trades Institute of the Mid-Atlantic Region (FTI) kicked off 2016’s National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) by hosting an “Apprenticeship Open House” on Monday November 14, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at its facility in Northeast Philadelphia.  The event featured live demonstrations by apprentices working in the construction finishing trades. Educators, employers and registered apprentices also answered students’ questions on how to apply and succeed in an apprenticeship at FTI.

FTI offers young people with Apprenticeships or “earn  and learn” opportunities that lead to family sustaining careers in drywall finishing, glazing and glass working, commercial painting, bridge painting and wall covering industries.  FTI is a partner in the Vocational Intern Partnership (VIP) Program: a partnership with the School District of Philadelphia that serves as a pathway for Career and Technical Education (CTE) students into union apprenticeships.  The program is a pre-apprenticeship program that prepares these students with the technical and professional skills necessary to enter and successfully complete a union apprenticeship in these fields.

PSP Gives $1.1mil Grant to Roxborough High School

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia School Partnership (“PSP”) today announced it has given a $1.1 million grant to Roxborough High School (Roxborough) to support an academic turnaround. Roxborough, a neighborhood high school, has been implementing an “academy” career and technical education model through a partnership with Philadelphia Academies, Inc. (“PAI”). The grant will help the school improve academic outcomes by creating more alignment and synergy between general education classes and career and technical education classes. PSP has now given nearly $16 million to the School District of Philadelphia, making it the District’s largest private funder.

Roxborough’s plan is focused on transforming teaching and learning so that it is rigorous, student-centered and community-focused; giving students access to additional rigorous programs of study; and building a leadership community that emphasizes holding all stakeholders accountable for the school’s success. Ultimately, the key objectives are producing a higher graduation rate and a higher percentage of college- and career-ready graduates, as evidenced by college persistence and career entry data.

Reading Terminal Market Announces Two New Merchants

PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday, October 6, Reading Terminal Market officials announced the addition of two new merchants coming soon to the renowned Philadelphia public market. Shibumi Farm and Fox & Son Fancy Corndogs and will deliver specialty items unlike any that Reading Terminal shoppers and diners have seen before.

Shibumi Farm will provide more than 35 unique species of locally grown mushrooms throughout the year. As one of only 200 recognized mushroom farms in the United States, Shibumi will offer 10-15 types of cultivated mushrooms that no other grower in the country has to offer. In addition to selling different types including pink oyster, hen-of-the-woods, shiitake and pioppino, Shibumi will sell a variety of products special to Reading Terminal including mushroom stocks, pastas, vegetarian and vegan pâtés and faux-crab cakes made of mushrooms that have the taste and texture of fresh crab meat. Shibumi Farm was founded in Princeton, NJ four years ago by Alan Kaufman, former investment banker with a life-long passion for fungi.

Fox & Son will offer freshly-made, unique corn dogs along with specialty poutines, Birchrun Hill Farm squeaky cheese curds, and “dressed-up” baked potatoes. While Fox & Son will serve the traditional corn dog, its menu will also include gluten-free, vegetarian and other allergy-friendly varieties to serve all likes of food lovers. Fox & Son’s owners are familiar with running a business out of Reading Terminal Market; two of the owners, Rebecca Foxman and Ezekial Ferguson, have managed the Valley Shepherd Creamery & Meltkraft Grilled Cheese stall for the past 4 years.

The openings of Fox & Son and Shibumi Farm are set for the spring of 2017, and will split the merchant stand previously occupied by the Salumeria location at the market.
